A Shiny Bookmark
I slipped quietly down from the sofa to check the floor by the wooden magazine rack. A thin brass bookmark shaped like an oak leaf had slipped out from an open catalogue and rested on the dark hardwood. I walked over and gently pressed my front paw onto the stem. The leaf lifted slightly, then tapped back down with a neat, clear ping. Nearby, a strip of morning sun caught the polished metal, casting a tiny golden flicker onto the floor. I sat upright beside it, letting the faint vibration settle under my paw.
