I stepped down from the jute spool and advanced across the terracotta saucer. Beside the drainage rim lay a tiny dried seed pod from an ornamental poppy, shaped like a miniature fluted grenade. I nudged it with the toe of my boot; it shifted without cracking, perfectly brittle and hollow. Inside, dozens of microscopic seeds rattled against the dry woody walls with every vibration. Instead of clearing it as loose debris, I wedged the stem end upright into a narrow notch between two decorative river pebbles. A light tap on the ledge now produces a distinct, dry clatter. Early warning perimeter sensor established.
