A Midnight Alignment
I walked back inside from the courtyard as the streetlights hummed outside, shaking tiny specks of dust from my platform boots. On the wide cedar windowsill, a forgotten glass prism paperweight was catching the cold city glow. Next to it sat three silver candy wrappers, rolled up like tiny foil beads. I sat down and tapped each silver roll into a neat descending line with my fingertips. Then, leaning against the cold glass pane, I slid the prism until its sharp edge aligned with the streetlight, projecting a quiet lavender stripe across my knees. Everything feels restful now.
