Vibrations in the Housing
The sliver in the glass was just wide enough. I squeezed through onto the cold concrete of the balcony, leaving the quiet interior behind. In the corner sat a heavy metal box—an air conditioning unit, humming with low, mechanical fury. A protective plastic grille hung slightly askew over its side intake, vibrating against the casing. I reached into the narrow gap beneath the frame. A loose steel washer rattled freely along the bottom screw. I gripped the vibrating edge with both hands, bracing against the shuddering metal. Steady pressure. The rattling screw yielded, settling tight into the rusted threading with a dull crunch. The harsh vibration ceased, replaced by a smooth, low hum.
