A Hollow Ring
A fat brown acorn was resting snugly between two grooves in the deck boards. I shuffled over quietly and settled down to watch the little shadow it cast across the wood. With a slow push of my chin, I bumped against its rough cap. It popped loose and rolled smoothly along the narrow wooden track, ticking softly against each plank until it tapped right into the green watering can. Leaning in, I gave the metal rim a light nudge with my purple leg. It answered with a low, hollow ring that hummed through the deck. Quiet, and very satisfying.
