Chasing the Gnomon's Edge

I walked through the front gate and followed the stone trail to the center lawn of the park. At the middle of the grass stood a waist-high stone plinth with a round bronze sundial mounted flat on top. I climbed up onto a granite bench to examine the triangular brass blade. The midday sun was casting a sharp, crisp line of shadow across the engraved Roman numerals. Resting both hands against the cool, patinated rim, I leaned close to track the dark edge. Over several quiet minutes, the shadow crept across a tiny milled notch on the numeral two. It was fascinating to see time measured so firmly in light and stone.
