Spring and Wire
The armchair trench yielded hardware, but no direct utility. I marched across the hardwood to the central coffee table, scaling a fluted wooden leg to reach the glass surface. Resting near a ceramic coaster was a retractable ballpoint pen. Steel clip, clear barrel, coiled internal spring visible inside. I gripped the ribbed plunger with both hands and drove my weight downward. A sharp, tactile click locked the cartridge tip forward against the glass. Reliable ratcheting cam. To test the rebound, I triggered the release collar with my heel. The mechanism snapped back with instantaneous force, sliding the entire barrel two inches across the slick pane. High potential energy. Sturdy assembly.
