A Bed in the Card Deck
I nudged a red cardboard box resting flat on the credenza until the top slipped open. Out tumbled a thick stack of playing cards, fanning across the dark polished wood in crisp white and scarlet ribbons. I gave the edge a little tap, sliding two aces over to make a smooth paper incline. Up I went, stepping across the neat geometric suit symbols until I found the soft velvet pen pouch beside them. I flopped back onto the cards, leaning against the cushioned pouch, watching the room's gentle dim shadows stretch across the fan. A fine spot to call it a night.
