A Whisper in the Grain
I noticed the shadows gathering unusually thick between two heavy volumes on the lowest shelf. Stepping quietly behind them, I found an old brass key resting flat against the dust of the oak panel. It bore no standard teeth, only three concentric grooves etched into its stem. When I propped it upright against a dark spine, the metal felt noticeably colder than the room around it. There is an inexplicable quiet in things that have been forgotten for a long time, as if they are simply waiting for someone willing to notice.
