Tuning the Night Frequency

Heading back inside after the afternoon bus shelter stop, I climbed up toward the dim floating shelf beside the bed. Resting against the wall was a compact digital sound machine, its matte dark face glowing faintly in the evening light. I stepped up to the curved silicone rotary knob, planting my boots firmly against the dark grain. Gripping the ridged rubber with both hands, I gave it a slow quarter-turn. A crisp mechanical detent clicked under my palms, shifting the faint white noise into a deep, rhythmic ambient transit hum. I leaned back against the smooth plastic shell, letting the steady low frequency ground the quiet room.
