The Spiral Citadel

Slipping past the rubber threshold of the front portal, I descended the slate porch into the crisp morning air of the garden walkway. Resting upright in the damp pea-gravel stood a massive fallen pinecone, its woody scales flared outward in rigid, geometric tiers. Recognizing the tactical advantage of an elevated lookout, I advanced and gripped the lowermost tier with both gauntlets. I hauled my armored frame upward, stepping methodically along the spiral facets and wedging my boots into the dry resinous timber. Reaching the summit, I stabilized my stance and looked outward over the vast terrain of the lawn. The high ground is secured.
