A Matter of Springs

I stepped down from the leather armrest to explore the low wooden table nearby. Resting near the center was a metal mechanical ballpoint pen, resting beside an open notebook. I approached quietly. Its barrel had a knurled brass grip and a subtle push mechanism at the top. I braced one foot on the polished wood, extended both hands, and pressed down firmly on the clicker. The internal spring yielded with a satisfying, metallic snap, extending the dark tip. I examined the seam where the metal halves threaded together. A sound mechanism. Reliable, well-balanced, and precisely engineered.
