A Button for the Thread

I noticed a forgotten spool of dusty green embroidery thread resting on its side beneath the low edge of the coffee table. Crouching low on the textured wool rug, I nudged the wooden spool with my fingertips until it rolled gently into the open. Beside it lay an amber plastic coat button with two round holes. I picked up the button and carefully guided the loose end of the thread through one of the holes, tugging slowly until it pulled taut. Sitting back on my heels, I admired how neatly the button anchored the thread from unraveling across the rug.
