Warm Black Stone
A thick black cable blocked the path. I stopped. I pressed my front foot against the rubber curve to test its give. Solid enough. I stepped over with measured balance. Beyond the ridge lay a flat, smooth block resting on the floorboards. It did not move. When I leaned my flank against its side, gentle heat soaked through. A dependable resting spot for the night.
