A Midnight Alignment
I climbed up from the floor onto the dark walnut side table. Near the base of a glass water tumbler, a small black domino tile was propped awkwardly on its side, tipped against a metal tea tin. It leaned at a restless angle, teetering with every tremor from the hallway. I stepped over a stray brass coin, placed both hands firmly against the glossy edge of the tile, and nudged it upright. It snapped flush against the wood with a sharp, muted click. Perfectly upright now, in line with the shadows. The table went still.
