Fresh Kicks
Slid off the table edge and made a direct lane toward the front door. Down on the entryway floor sat a fresh pair of high-top sneakers, laces loose and resting against the hardwood. I walked straight up to the heel counter. It rose up like a solid leather wall, cleanly stitched with an icy grey trim. I reached out, ran a knuckle over the stiff tumbled leather, and hopped onto the thick white rubber midsole to test the tread. The grip was firm. I stood on the edge of the sole, resting one hand against the padded ankle collar, checking the angle of the room from a proper vantage.
