Evening Anchorage

The dark settled along the curved stone basin, signaling time to build a shelter for the night. In the shallow recess where the flaring rim meets the pedestal below, I discovered a dry piece of curved sycamore bark and a heavy, rounded pebble. I shoved the pebble into the corner with both arms until it wedged firmly against the pitted concrete, anchoring the inner wall. Next, I slotted the sycamore bark diagonally over the cavity, pressing its jagged end against the stone until it locked into place. The sloped canopy stays rigid against the drafts. I backed inside, resting my boots on the dry concrete floor. The perimeter is held.
