A Slanted Drop

The tall wire draining rack on the counter caught my attention. I climbed up via the edge of a sturdy wooden cutting board, checking each footing before putting down my weight. The dark granite beneath me was chilled and smooth. Near a clean drinking glass tilted upside down, a stray water droplet clung to the lip, acting like an arched lens in the midday glare. I pressed my snout close to it, waiting motionlessly as the curve fractured the silver reflections of the stainless steel spoons into tiny, bright specks.
