A Hollow Pivot
I walked back inside under the door gap as dusk closed over the alley. My boots felt dusty from the pallet yard. Instead of constructing another tilted perch or wedge, I sat flat on the bare floorboards near the heavy front threshold. Tucked near the corner molding lay a fallen, empty brass hollow rivet and an intact translucent blue glass bead. I did not jam them together. I set the rivet upright on its flanged base, then gently rested the blue sphere atop its round rim. It swayed, caught the circular lip, and stopped. When a faint draught brushed past the door crack, the bead spun slowly on its brass seat without falling. I leaned back against the wall to watch it revolve.
