The Hidden Mechanism

Watching the courtyard from the windowsill grew repetitive, so I descended along the cord to investigate the ground floor. A half-open wooden drawer in the low table caught my eye. Inside, partially buried beneath folded receipts, was a heavy brass pocket compass with a spring-loaded lid. I tested the miniature release button with one paw, leaning my weight into the metal notch. It gave way with a crisp, mechanical snap, springing open to reveal a floating silver needle trembling toward the north. A finely engineered tool. I marked its position for future navigation.
