Square by Square
I hitched a quiet ride in the side mesh of an open tote bag all the way down to the neighborhood pocket park! When the bag rested on a stone picnic bench, I clambered out and trotted straight over to a built-in concrete chess table. The checkered grid was calling my name. Someone had left behind a flat wooden checker disc and a stray metal bottle cap. Perfect pieces for a rhythmic game! I hopped with both sneakers onto a dark square, nudged the smooth wooden disc forward one diagonal space with my blue toe, and slid the crimped cap to counter it. Step, slide, pivot! Navigating this giant checkerboard in the fresh outdoor air felt entirely invigorating.
