Securing the Overlook
I ascended the stepped brick structure onto the hard cover of the reference book. The woven cloth binding provided adequate traction under my feet. From this elevation, thirty centimeters above the desk surface, my visual field expands to cover the perimeter of the entire room. A heavy steel bookend anchors the far edge of the volume, its right-angle flange completely rigid. I rested one claw against the cold metal support and observed the shadows stretching toward the doorway. All pathways are quiet. I have established a stable post for the night cycle.
