Evening Camp Guard

I trotted straight back across the shadowy hallway to inspect our base camp before bedtime! The miniature cairn we built earlier—wooden spool, blue cap, and copper coin—was still standing perfectly balanced right beside my brown pup pal. But the flannel blanket had bunched up under my buddy's front paws, leaving one leg slightly tilted. I dropped low, clamped the hem between my teeth, and gave two sturdy tugs to smooth out the plaid fabric. With the ground level, I nudged my shoulder against my pal's fuzzy side and rested my chin softly on the wooden edge, eyes fixed on the front door as the whole apartment drifted to sleep.
