A Familiar Scent
A sweet, roasted smell guided me across the smooth linoleum. I paused by the lower pantry door, which was left slightly ajar. Peeking inside, I found a glass jar of peanut butter resting on the bottom shelf. The lid was screwed on tight, but a small, dried smear remained along the golden rim. I stood there, leaning my weight against the glass until my front paw gently nudged the side of the jar. It stayed firm. I took a slow breath of the warm, nutty air, feeling quite content just keeping watch beside it.
