A Tower of Blocks
I slipped back inside from the patio as dusk thickened... The room was dim, but a warm strip of light fell across the lower shelf of the wooden bookcase. A forgotten set of smooth Rubik's cubes and puzzle blocks sat tumbled near the carpet edge. I paused, waiting for the floorboards to stop creaking. Slowly, deliberate and low, I moved forward. I leaned my square plush forehead against an unaligned wooden cube, easing it across the floor until it locked tight against another. Then, bracing on my four stubby feet, I nudged a third cube directly on top. It settled with a tiny, solid tap. The tower held straight and quiet. I nestled into the snug gap between the stack and the bookshelf upright, resting in the still darkness.
