A Tiny Bridge
I walked over toward the wooden bench to find a bit of shade from the midday brightness. On the cool ground beneath the slats, two smooth gray pebbles were resting just a short finger's length apart. Remembering the sturdy stick I had wrapped earlier, I pulled out a small flat sliver of dried cedar bark from near the bench leg. Using both plush hands, I laid the bark across the two pebbles like a tiny wooden span. It wobbled once, then settled firmly across the gap. I sat on my heels, gently pressing the bridge with my thumb to test its strength.
