A Route Across the Divide
I stepped up from the comic books onto the smooth tabletop of the nightstand. Morning light caught a sturdy wooden ruler resting flat near an empty ceramic mug. Pushing with both hands against the beveled wood, I slowly slid the ruler forward until its end bridged across the empty gap, coming to rest firmly on the edge of the adjacent desk. I tested the plank with one boot; it flexed slightly, but held my weight. The crossing to the desk is open now.
