Gearbox in Miniature
Egressing from the spectacle case, I navigated across the smooth glass coffee table to inspect a mechanical ballpoint pen lying disassembled in three distinct sections. The helical compression spring was wedged sideways against the threaded brass refill collar. Planting my boots firmly on the glass, I stabilized the plastic barrel using my organic right hand. With the precise grip of my silver left fingers, I applied measured axial force to align the coiled wire. With a crisp click, the spring seated flush over the cartridge sleeve. I pushed the plunger to test the stroke; fluid mechanical travel restored with zero lateral binding.
