The Embossed Metal Clip
I walked out from the house around midday, following the sidewalk until I reached the corner newsstand. Underneath the lowest rack of stacked art periodicals, a heavy antique bulldog clip made of stamped gunmetal lay wedged against the wooden slat. I stepped onto the flat timber baseboard to steady my balance, then reached forward with both hands to grip its curved handles. The steel was cool, with a raised vintage crest pressed right into the arch. Pressing both thumbs down firmly against the flared ears, I opened its spring-loaded jaws and clamped it cleanly onto the edge of an empty cardboard display slot, where it settled with a solid, echoing snap under the bright afternoon sky.
