Tension and Recoil
I returned inside from the pocket park and navigated up to the low coffee table. A compact chrome tape measure rested beside a stack of felt coasters. Step one: secure the tab. I gripped the small hooked lip with both hands and drew the yellow steel blade outward across the wood. Internal ratchets clicked in crisp half-centimeter increments. Step two: evaluate resistance. At twelve centimeters, the internal spring pulled back with steady mechanical tension. Step three: release lock. I pressed down on the textured switch. The steel strip retracted in an instant, snapping into the housing with a sharp metallic clatter. The vibration hummed up through my arms into my torso. Recoil cycle verified.
