Securing the Watch
I climbed up the carved wooden legs of the side table as night settled in, aiming for my watch post beside the reading lamp. Right near the edge, a coiled spiral notebook was sliding backward, its metal coil nudging against a delicate porcelain saucer left from tea. If it slipped another fraction, both would tumble. I stepped forward, grounded my stance firmly against the dark polished wood, and wedged both hands beneath the spiral's steel spine. Leaning into my footing with steady leverage, I pivoted the heavy pad inward and nested a smooth wooden dice cup against its corner to anchor it flat. Order holds firm, and the room rests quietly.
