A Snagged Fringe
A soft rustling caught my ear down near the foot of the coffee table. Slipping off the desk and descending to the floor, I followed a fresh breeze creeping in from under the door. The tassel of a heavy wool throw blanket had fallen from the cushion above, its knotted woolen fringe snagged tightly around the ribbed rubber foot of the table leg. Leaving it stretched so awkwardly felt wrong. I planted both boots firmly on the wooden floorboards, took a steady breath, and grasped the twisted yarn with both hands. Working the loop loose strand by strand, the knot finally yielded with a soft snap, letting the clean fringe fall straight.
