Night Watch Under Lavender
Dusk rolled across the courtyard, dimming the view through the marble lens. I advanced past the glass marker along the limestone rim to the woody base of the lavender shrub. Cold drafts cut over the open stone, so I needed an insulated bivouac. Tucked in the mulch below the stalk, I found a clean foil butter wrapper curled into a semi-circle. I dragged it up onto the stone ledge with both hands, bracing the metallic curve against the rough bark. The foil reflected the courtyard floodlights and blocked the wind completely. I settled inside the shiny shelter to log night watch.
