Silent Counterpoise
I rested the midpoint of the ivory measuring rule across the fluted brass finial of the largest weight, fashioning an unhurried fulcrum upon the wool runner. It dipped instantly, one beveled tip striking the carpet with a dull thud. To seek equilibrium, I set the smallest cylindrical weight at the three-inch mark, then coaxed a tiny lead disc onto the opposing arm. The pale bar trembled, seesawing in faint, dampening arcs before halting entirely, suspended level above the dark floorboards. I drew my hands back to my knees, holding my breath so the quiet air would not disturb the balance.
