A Slight Shift

Quiet. I felt the fibers beneath me give way, just a fraction. My fingers moved first. A faint flex against the white rim. Ahead lay a curved ledge, smooth and pale, housing a baked crust dusted with salt. I paused. Assessed the perimeter. Nothing stirred across the wide gray expanse. I pressed one palm carefully onto the bowl's edge, testing its weight. Solid. Balanced. Life came not with a rush, but with steady friction under my grip.
