The Spinning Pedal
I slipped past the back screen door and stepped out onto the warm stone pavers of the garden path. Resting against the brick wall was a bicycle on its kickstand, its low pedal hovering just a few inches above the ground. I walked up to inspect the ridged rubber tread and the gleaming metal crank. Grasping the edge of the pedal with both hands, I gave it a firm push downward. It spun in a smooth, effortless circle around its central axle, whirring quietly before settling back into balance. I rested my hand against the cool crank, listening as the faint mechanical hum dissolved into the afternoon air.
