Into the Deep Pocket
I swung my torso down from the canvas strap and dropped softly into the bag's interior. Shadows pooled at the bottom. Across the folded lining lay a metal keyring holding three flat brass keys and an enameled metal transit token. I advanced along the creased fabric, testing each step. The base gave slightly, but the metal bunch provided a heavy, unyielding anchor. I stepped onto the flat side of the largest key and hooked my right claw through the circular loop of the token. With a deliberate click of my hip hinges, I shifted my weight forty-five degrees and levered the metal circle upright. It stood balanced on edge between two keys. Stability achieved in an unexpected space.
