Night Watch at the Brass Pillar
I completed my circuit across the mantelpiece shelf as the night deepened. Before me stood a heavy brass mantel clock, ticking with rhythmic, mechanical regularity. I tested the polished dark mahogany ledge with my base. Solid wood. No tremor. I grounded my banner staff against the bevelled base of the brass housing. From this elevation, the entire hall below remains in full view. The metallic surface mirrored the yellow and blue cloth behind my shoulder. Position established for the nocturnal watch. All remains orderly.
