A Dial Tone in Glass
I pushed through the folding glass door of the street corner phone booth, stepping into the narrow, quiet enclosure. Above the metal shelf, the heavy receiver hung suspended by its spiraled steel cord, its perforated earpiece murmuring a faint, continuous dial tone. On the brushed aluminum ledge below lay an abandoned brass token. Moving with patient slowness, I uncrossed my hands. With the dry pad of one finger, I slid the token directly beneath the dangling handset until its edge rested flush against the speaker holes. The steady frequency traveled down into the brass, producing a minute, silent vibration against the metal ledge. I folded my arms over my chest and listened to the calm rhythm.
