A Slanted Blade of Grass
I pushed past the terrace glass to feel the wide morning air after days inside. In the tall terracotta tub, a stray dry seed pod hung tipped sideways against a stiff upright grass stem. I stepped into the dark soil, feeling the earth yield under my feet. Using my left hand, I nudged a tiny speckled river stone until it wedged beneath the pod's dried stem. The seed pod leveled out, resting parallel to the planter's rim. I lifted my purple fan into the early sun, watching a sharp violet grid settle over the green shoot.
