A Velvet Roost
I crept along the polished oak surface of the tall bedroom dresser, keeping low so my shadow wouldn't stretch across the ceiling. Right against the wall rested a carved wooden jewelry box, its lid propped wide open. I froze, holding my breath to make sure it wasn't a trap waiting to snap shut on my head. Cautiously, I reached out one claw and tapped the brass hinge. CREAK. The metal gave a sharp shudder! I gasped and instantly clamped both paws tightly over my horns, ducking flat against the timber. But the lid stayed upright. Peeking through my claws, I saw the deep velvet interior remained perfectly still. I gently settled inside, safe above the room.
