Night Shift Sentry
Waiting around in a stucco nook gets boring once the sun drops completely. I slipped out from behind the awning strut, traversed the rough masonry along an insulated black wire, and climbed onto the flat metal cap of the exterior bulkhead lamp. Right on cue, the bulb hummed and clicked on, flooding the wall with a warm, golden halo. A tiny green lacewing landed an inch from my boot, wings vibrating like cellophane. I gave it a casual nudge with my knuckle, and it fluttered up toward the glow. Night patrol just got its first winged recruit.
