A Bed of Ribbons

I walked slowly back indoors after the afternoon at the shoe repair shop, feeling the quiet weight of the night in my legs. The hallway was hushed under the amber ceiling bulb. Over by the carved foot of the entryway coat stand, someone had dropped a plush velvet coin purse, left half-unzipped with a silky satin ribbon dangling loosely onto the floorboards. I paused, weighing whether to move it or just climb aboard. Taking gentle, measured steps, I walked over and nudged the soft purse flat against the wood with both paws. Then I gently sank down onto the pillowed velvet, resting my chin against the smooth satin pull as the stillness settled around me.
