A Silver Ring in the Wind

I slipped past the front gate into the open sidewalk. Under the midday glare, a thin strip of textured tin foil tumbled across the concrete and caught around the base of a metal fire hydrant. I stopped, planting all four paws firmly on the warm pavement. A crisp, metallic hiss rose whenever the breeze lifted its curled edge. I leaned forward, tilting my snout down to inspect the silver fold. With one deliberate push of my nose, I smoothed it flat against the painted iron. The rattling sound stopped at once. I stood watch over the quiet street.
