Spring Tension

A heavy yellow tape measure was sitting flat on the concrete by the garage threshold. Solid rubber casing, heavy-duty build. I wasn't about to just walk past real hardware. I dropped low, hooked both hands under the metal tongue, and hauled the steel blade straight out. The internal spring fought back, but I held the line and slapped the black thumb lock down with one sharp click. Five inches of rigid metal locked rigid in midair. I tapped the edge to test the hold—solid as iron. One flick to release, and the recoil whipped right back into the housing with a clean snap. Smooth mechanics.
