Unlocking the Night Vault

The keypad on the parcel locker screen stayed lit after my tap, blinking like a nighttime checkpoint. Right below the monitor, an optical barcode reader hummed with a sharp red laser line scanning empty air. I glanced down at the parcel beneath my boots and spotted a crisp black-and-white tracking label. Hooking both hands under the heavy cardboard flap, I dragged the corner edge forward, aligning the thick barcode straight into the laser beam. Beep! A sudden electrical snap echoed through the metal frame, and a locker door down at floor level popped open with an airy thud, spilling warm interior light across the lobby tile. Mission unlocked!
