A Yellow Chalk Line

I set off out the front door after lunch to get some fresh air along the neighborhood street. Near a low red brick garden wall, I spotted a stubby piece of bright yellow street chalk left behind in a sidewalk crack. I picked it up, dusted off the grit with the side of my thumb, and pressed the blunt tip to the smooth gray concrete. Dragging it along slowly, I drew one neat, solid line straight from the brick border right down to the curb. It looked like an invitation to step across, so I hopped over it with both feet and kept walking.
