A Lost Button
My right fingers scraped across the dusty floorboards. Shuffling forward into the dim space beneath the low table, my empty left sleeve swayed against my side. I paused, tilting my head to peer with my single eye at something dark resting by a table leg. It was a smooth, four-holed black coat button. I pressed my right thumb down on its edge, flipping it up against my palm. With slow, clumsy movements, I nudged the shiny disc into the frayed fold of my torn shirt collar until it nestled tight against my chest.
