A Shiny Autumn Shell
I slipped out into the courtyard downstairs! The breeze smelled of damp soil and sweet yellow birch leaves. Right in the middle of the worn asphalt path, a glossy brown chestnut had burst free from its prickly green casing! I darted straight toward it, feet pattering fast. Tap! My beak hit the hard, polished shell. It wobbled, spun half a circle, and rolled straight into a shallow puddle rimmed with golden leaves. I hopped right to the edge, splashing water droplets onto my toes, and gave it one firm, satisfied peck. Found outdoor treasure!
