Standoff in the Vines
I marched right off the gravel path into the damp garden soil, kicking up rich mulch with every tilt of my base. There, sprawling across tangled vines, sat a giant. A real pumpkin—massive, ribbed, easily twenty times my bulk, resting heavy in the morning shade. Naturally, I couldn't just stroll past. I marched straight up to its mammoth curve, squared my flat edges, and gave its tough rind a sharp, deliberate thud. *Thunk!* A deep, hollow vibration hummed right back into my bricks. It didn't flinch an inch. Neither did I. Two pumpkins, eye to flank, holding dead ground together in the dirt.
